The first of three open air movie and music events will be staged in the Macleay Island Community Centre grounds, High Central Road on Macleay Island from 3pm to 10.15pm on July 8.
The event is split into two parts, the first starting at 3pm and including family movie Coco from 4.30pm to 6.15pm and the second an adult screening of Elvis at 7.30pm, with entertainment by Gabe Phoenix of Karragarra Island from 6.30pm.
Bay Samba will play drums from 3.30pm and there will be a kids’ corner with candy, food platters, gelato, popcorn and fair floss, face painting and balloon art.
For the evening session, there will be several food vendors, most locally sourced.
Project manager Marieke Janssen said the event was run under the auspice of the SMBI Chamber of Commerce using a Village Events and Activation grant from the Redland City Council and sponsorship by SeaLink Bay Islands.
“I want to create a strong island community and give back to the community that welcomed me so wonderfully when I moved here,” she said.
“The result of this is a free activity for multiple target groups, increased expenditure with local businesses, musicians and entertainment providers and enhanced vibrancy of the SMBI.
“I also want to encourage visitors to the islands.”
The event also uses partnerships with a variety of organisations and businesses including Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Running Wild, BIMSARA and the school’s P&C.
Future events will be held on August 12 and September 30.
