Nineteen Redland singers aged 10 to 14 will perform alongside the cast of Opera Australia in The Barber of Seville, coming to RPAC on July 22.
The singers are the students of Redland City choir conductor Anita Taylor, nine coming from the South East Steiner School at Thorneside and 10 from her vocal studio Ava at Birkdale.
Ms Taylor said she was asked to field a children’s chorus some months ago and the children had been working ever since to perfect their parts.
They appear in the police scene in act one and in the finale, performing five passages, all sung in Italian.
“It has been a wonderful challenge and the students have been excited to sing in Italian,” she said.
“The challenge has been to get that classical sound and attain that north to south with the mouth.
“Most of the students have reported how easy it is to sing pop songs after this sort of training.”
On July 20, the students will work with children’s chorus master Jonathon Bam on song specifics and stage direction.
“This will be a memory that will last forever. It is not often that an opportunity like this comes up,” Ms Taylor said.
Tickets are $65, $59 and $55. Book on 3829 8131.
