A salon-style concert will be presented at 6 Marlborough Road, Wellington Point, the final in a series of home-based concerts from 2.30pm on October 29.
The concert is presented by Wellington Point soprano Rosemarie Arthars, violinist Clare Cooney, violist Katie Sillar, ‘cellist Danielle Bentley and pianist Leanne Swanson who will present a repertoire of quartets by Beethoven, Schumann and Turina and some lieder/art songs.
The quartet comprising piano and strings is rarely heard, making this repertoire intricate and unique.
Leanne said she had played many piano trios, but not much piano quartet repertoire.
“The piano is a different beast and every time you include a different instrument into the mix, you learn to listen and to play in such a different way that it keeps you on your toes,” she said.
“Your imagination is swept away while you listen to or play this music. It gives you an opportunity to escape the real world for a while.
“The repertoire we are playing is so multi-faceted, pushing the boundaries with harmony and rhythm.”
Leanne said the home concert was an appropriate entry to the world of classical music and 19th century European salons.
“We are so used to attending concerts in large halls that it is easy to forget that until about 1850, most music was experienced in people’s homes, churches, small intimate venues or salons,” Leanne said.
“In the 19th century, soirées in salons were places where people could gather to discuss literature, poetry, philosophy, theology and ideas in a convivial and stimulating atmosphere, often with food and drink.
“The salon became significant during the Age of Enlightenment and the French Revolution as a hub for lively political debate.
“It was also a place where women could enjoy a leading role and opportunities to air and publish their ideas.
“In this contemporary salon, we explore classical music, enjoy a glass and become up close and personal with the composers.”
A minimum donation of $50 will be received and includes wine and cheese. Book with David Bull on 0419 674 188.
